Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 - Istanbul - Race 2
Clos takes two
Dani Clos (Jenzer Motorsport) took his second victory here in Istanbul after a perfect race. This takes the Spaniard to the top of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 standings after an ideal weekend. The podium places went to the same drivers as yesterday but in reverse order with Atte Mustonen (Koiranen Bros) followed by Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula).
Dani Clos did not get off to a good start, in contrast to Atte Mustonen. The Spaniard tried to intimidate the Finn, but Mustonen held firm to turn into the opening bend first. Determined not to let another victory slip away from him, Clos then attacked and was already back in the lead before the end of lap one.
Clos then immediately opened up a gap over those behind him. Mustonen in turn was coming under pressure from Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula), Kasper Andersen (JD Motorsport) and Chris Van der Drift (JD Motorsport). Like yesterday, the RedBull drivers were putting on a show in the main field with Brendon Hartley (Motopark Academy) ending up in a spin while fighting it out with Filipe Albuquerque and Sébastien Buemi.
Further back down the field, Oliver Campos (Twincam) had to abandon after running into Martin Plowman (Prema Power Team). The safety car then came out to allow the race marshals to clear the stricken cars from the circuit. This completely cancelled out Clos' lead, which he had built up to 3'' in just four laps!
The race then resumed after three laps behind the safety car. Clos was perfect from the restart. Andersen however came off by far the worst losing his fourth place to both Van der Drift and Albuquerque. Further back, Bertrand Baguette (Epsilon Euskadi) snatched ninth away from Sébastien Buemi.
Clearly in difficulty, Kasper Andersen then lost two more places to Edoardo Piscopo (Cram Compétition) and Bertrand Baguette. At the back of the field, Frédéric Vervisch (SL Formula Racing) collided with Pippa Mann (Comtec Racing). Both drivers were subsequently forced to abandon.
Bertrand Baguette threw away all his fine efforts thus far on the penultimate lap. Kasper Andersen, Sébastien Buemi, Jaime Alguersuari Jr. and Daniel Campos all made it into the top ten as a result.
Dani Clos: «I got off to a good start, but Atte was even better. I went hard on the attack from the moment I took the lead until the safety car came out. After that, I went back on the offensive to put myself out of reach."
Atte Mustonen: «I got off to very a good start but there seemed to be a problem with rear of the car on the opening two laps. But, in any case, I'm very satisfied with another podium finish."
Carlo Van Dam: "It was a very exciting race. I made a mess of my start but I managed to make it back up into third place. The car was still understeering a lot, even if the work done by the team has paid dividends over yesterday. What we need now is some wins."
